Healthy Country Kids Program

The Healthy Country Kids Program at Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) supports the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and their families across the West Kimberley. The program takes a holistic approach, recognising that children’s health is influenced by their physical, emotional, social, and cultural environment. Through culturally safe care, education, and community engagement, the program aims to give children the best start in life.

Preventive health and early intervention

Healthy Country Kids focuses on preventive care to support children’s growth and development. The program provides health checks, immunisations, nutrition guidance, and screening for common childhood illnesses. Early identification of health concerns allows families to access timely care and support, helping children stay healthy and thrive.

Health education for families

The program works closely with families to provide practical health education that supports healthy habits at home. Topics include nutrition, hygiene, oral health, physical activity, and the importance of regular check-ups. By involving parents and caregivers, the program empowers families with knowledge and strategies to create a healthy and supportive home environment for their children.

Culturally safe and community-focused care

Healthy Country Kids is delivered in a culturally respectful and family-centred way. DAHS staff work in partnership with community leaders to ensure programs and services reflect local knowledge, culture, and values. Activities and resources are tailored to the needs of the community, helping children and families feel supported, engaged, and connected to their culture while promoting long-term health and wellbeing.

Through early intervention, education, and culturally safe care, the Healthy Country Kids Program helps Aboriginal children in the Derby region grow up healthy, strong, and supported by their families and community.
