Counselling Sessions
Derby Aboriginal Health Service offers individual and group counselling sessions to support the social, emotional and mental wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
Counselling is provided in a confidential, respectful and non judgemental environment where people can feel safe to talk openly and at their own pace. Support is person centred and responsive to each individual’s needs, experiences and goals.
How counselling can help
Counselling can support people who are experiencing challenges or going through difficult times. Our counsellors work alongside individuals to help them better understand their situation, build on personal strengths and develop healthy ways to cope.
Support may assist with managing stress, navigating relationships, working through life changes, or making sense of thoughts and feelings. Counselling can also support positive change and help people feel more confident in moving forward.
Individual and group sessions
Counselling is available through one on one sessions or group based sessions, depending on individual preferences and needs.
Group counselling offers an opportunity to connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges, while individual sessions provide private, personalised support.
Men’s Group
The Men’s Group provides a culturally safe and respectful space for men to connect, yarn and support one another.
The group offers opportunities to talk about issues that can impact wellbeing, including mental health, relationships, fathering and life challenges. It aims to strengthen identity, resilience and positive decision making, while encouraging leadership, connection to culture and pathways to further support when needed.
Activities may include yarning circles, on Country experiences and wellbeing focused activities.
Women’s Group
The Women’s Group offers a safe and supportive space for women to focus on their wellbeing.
The program supports women to care for their mental, emotional and social health while navigating family, relationships and community responsibilities. Through activities such as yarning circles, cultural workshops and life skills sessions, the group encourages personal growth, builds coping skills and connects women to appropriate support services.
Youth Work
A welcoming space for young people to connect, learn and grow. In partnership with schools and youth services, the program offers activities such as creative art projects, cultural workshops, group yarning and social events.
These activities support young people to build confidence, resilience and leadership skills while encouraging a strong and positive sense of identity.
Liyarn Yarns
Our Social and Emotional Wellbeing team hosts a fortnightly radio segment sharing mental health tips, wellbeing messaging, local stories and community discussions.
The program helps connect our service and important information with the wider community. Tune in to 6DBY Larrakardi Radio on Thursdays (fortnightly) from 10am to 11am to listen in and stay connected.
Working together for holistic care
Where appropriate, counselling support may include referrals to other services or coordination with health and wellbeing programs within DAHS or with external service providers. This helps ensure people receive holistic care that supports all aspects of wellbeing.
