Be Healthy Program

The Maboo wirriya – Be Healthy Program supports young Aboriginal people to build healthier lifestyles and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Developed in response to community need, the program focuses on helping young people understand how everyday choices around food, physical activity, and wellbeing can have a long-term impact on their health.

The program was shaped through consultation with Aboriginal community members in Derby to ensure it reflects local knowledge, priorities, and lived experiences. Community discussions highlighted the importance of practical, culturally relevant education to support healthier lifestyle choices, particularly for young people aged 15–25. Guided by DAHS and informed by international research into diabetes prevention, the program was designed to provide meaningful support where it is needed most.

Practical health education

Delivered across eight sessions, the program combines easy-to-understand health education with hands-on activities that encourage participants to put learning into practice. Topics include healthy eating, understanding diabetes risk, and building confidence to make healthier lifestyle choices. By focusing on prevention and early awareness, the program helps participants develop the knowledge and skills needed to maintain long-term health.

Alongside education, the program includes group-based activities such as exercise and practical discussions that promote physical activity and positive lifestyle behaviours. This supportive group environment encourages participants to learn from each other, build confidence, and stay motivated as they work towards their health goals.
